Trust News

Trust News

The autumn migration has come to a close at Gunners Park with a wide variety of migratory birds passing through Gunners on their way south. Pied Flycatcher, Spotted Flycatcher, Redstart, Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler and a steady stream of Hirundines have all been recorded. The star of the show was a group of eight Spoonbills that were seen flying south high over Gunners Park on the 13th September. This represents the highest total in one sighting at Gunners Park and in South East Essex. These birds were seen later that afternoon heading south over Dungeness towards the Continent. This is a fantastic record for the Park. Also seen in the late migration period was a solitary Yellow Browed Warbler in Bunker Wood. This Siberian leaf warbler is a rare visitor to the park and a cracking site record. The winter waders have arrived from up north with Dunlin, Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Turnstone all showing well on Barge Pier. Redshank numbers are also up with circa 60 roosting on the island scrape this weekend. The Brent geese have arrived back from Russia and they have juveniles with them! This is a great sight as the last two years has not been good for breeding, with the adults arriving back unaccompanied. They can be seen feeding and squabbling by the Heavy Quick Firing Battery as the tide recedes.

The park has continued to show great diversity in invertebrates with several Wasp Spiders, Willow Emerald damselfly, Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly and the very rare Firebug all being recorded in the Park.

The Tuesday Volunteer Group has worked tirelessly to keep the park in good order. Recently the group has painted both the Spotlight Encasements as they had a significant amount of graffiti. Upcoming tasks will include wildflower meadow management including clearing the butterfly transect, Bramble reduction in the SSSI and park furniture maintenance.

There has been a spate of unauthorised ‘shrimping’ in the park this autumn/winter. An individual/s has been seen in the ditch and the lake with a large net harvesting all the aquatic life. This is not only unauthorised but illegal. If anyone sees an individual wearing chest high waders in the ditch or the lake at Gunners Park with a large net then please contact the Ranger immediately on 07738 458 916.

A big thank you to all the Gunners Rise residents who did not disturb the House Martins nesting on their properties this summer. It’s a wonderful sight to see these declining birds thriving in the park due to the relationship they have with the new Garrison development. There is still unfortunately a few incidents of residents disposing of their garden waste/grass cuttings into the park, either over their back fence or by walking into Gunners and tipping it into the park. Please be aware that this constitutes fly tipping, for which there are legal penalties involved.

Finally, I would like to thank all the residents and members of the Garrison for their continued support of the work we are doing at Gunners Park. The Park is constantly changing and evolving with the creation of wildflower meadows and the work we are doing in the SSSI. We are constantly looking to improve the visitor experience with guided walks and summer activities (weather depending!) so hopefully I will see everyone in the coming months enjoying the Park.

Kindest regards

Andrew Armstrong

Southend Bikeathon 2017 - Sponsored Cycle Ride

Dear Shoebury Garrison Residents Association,

As you know we hold a sponsored cycle ride each September in aid of BLOODWISE (formerly Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research).

The beginning of the event is through the roads of the Garrison and this makes the event possible and much safer for our riders.

Thank you for your support in previous years.

This letter is to inform you that due to ill health and other matters we are unable to hold the event this year. We are a small committee and do not think that we have enough time to organise the event as we would wish.

We intend to use the time to ensure that we can hold a successful event in 2018.

Directly our plans are finalised we will write seeking your support.

Sincerely,

Southend Bikeathon Committee

Would you like to help the community?

The Garrison Residents Association is having a restructure and we are looking for resident volunteers. In the ideal world we will find residents spread over the entire Garrison with a minimum of 5 residents. Open positions include the chair and secretary who will formally be voted in at the upcoming annual residents meeting.

GRA volunteers get together every other month and discuss local issues and where possible coordinate and distribute tasks that help and support the community. Ranging from the Garrison summer fate through to local planning issues.

If you are interested please leave your details below.

Health Centre Update

{LATEST: to be held at Hinguar School hall, 7.30pm, Tuesday 6th September}

Health Centre update – there is a planned ‘community meet’ with senior management in relation to the proposed health centre on the Garrison. This is due to take place Tuesday (6th September) in the evening, with location to be confirmed… hopefully Hinguar school.

This is a chance for residents to ask questions and give their views/ideas, so definitely worth attending if you can keep Tuesday evening free. Please spread the word to friends and neighbours, as not everyone is on Facebook. Thanks

If there is any change to the venue we will post it on the website at http://www.shoeburygarrison.com/news/2016/9/3/health-centre-update

SHOEBURY COMMON NORTH CONSULTATION

This Bulletin relates specifically to the Southend Borough Council Consultation on Shoebury Common North, that commenced on Thursday August 11th 2016 and ends on Sunday September 11th 2016.

The Consultation is a continuation of the work of the Shoeburyness Coastal Community Team in its aim of developing a recreational vision for the Shoebury area-------- Friends of Shoebury Common are part of that team.

Your views are needed:  It would be extremely useful for the Coastal Community Team if you would describe your current usage of Shoebury Common North and/or make any additional suggestions for non-commercial future usage of this land. This is the same piece of land that we attempted to get listed as a Village Green, but was unsuccessful.

The Consultation includes workshops. The first was held on August 11th 2016 but unfortunately with next to no participation by the public.

The second workshop is due to be held on Saturday August 20th 2016 from 9 am until 11 am at Shoebury Common South near to Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

We have suggested that the upcoming workshop should be open for a longer period. If there are any changes, to the venue or time of the workshop, we will endeavour to let you know.

The workshop will provide a local opportunity to complete a survey that has been put together by the Council in the form of a Questionnaire, a scanned copy of which is attached.

We strongly recommend that you read the attached document entitled “Background Info regarding Shoebury Common North” prior to completing the Questionnaire; it importantly includes a cautionary note regarding Questions 1 to 3 inclusive.

Please read this document before completing the Questionnaire.

If you are unable to attend the Shoebury Common workshop on Saturday August 20th 2016, there are various other ways you can complete the Questionnaire and participate in the Consultation, as follows:-

a) online at:

www.southend.gov.uk/shoeburycommonnorth

b) by submission of a completed hard copy of the Questionnaire to be submitted to the address shown on page 5 of the Questionnaire.

For those who wish to complete a hard copy of the Questionnaire  we would recommend that you aim to submit your completed document by Friday 9thSeptember 2016 to avoid missing the Consultation deadline– because the stated end date of the Consultation of 11th September is a non-working day.

We would emphasize that this is a very important survey and we are hoping there will be a fantastic response to it.

If you believe there should be no commercial or resident building on this land, for the benefit of future generations, this your opportunity to say so, when completing the Questionnaire.

A second bulletin is to follow with acopy of the Council questionnaire & location map.

Kind regards,

Ray Bailey & PeterGrubb --Friends of Shoebury Common (FoSC)
