Summer Fete
/On Sunday 12th June, the Garrison Residents Assoication held its inaugural Summer fete on the cricket pitch, as part of the Queens Birthday Celebrations in aid of one of our local charities Havens Hospice. The day itself started with much uncertainty weather wise, but undaunted, 50 metres of Union Flag bunting was erected along the north end of the Cricket Pitch as a hopeful sign that the weather would improve vastly for later that day. As the organisers cheered on many of the runners passing through the Garrisons via Mess Road, the heavens opened and as the rain poured down, the GRA were not altogether hopeful that the afternoon would hold out.
Luckily the sun broke, the Gazebos were quickly put upand the bouncy castles and music were up and running. Havens arrived with their tombola, Sports were arranged on the cricket pitch and as residents arrived so raffle tickets started selling. the amount and and quality of the raffle prizes donated by residents was astounding and the raffle proved to be a major success.
It was a fantastic sight to see so many residents, family and friends turn up for the afternoon, with food and drink aplenty. The sight of so many kids bouncing up and down on the bouncy castles and winning medals prizes at the egg and spoon race proved to be a major factor in what had become a fantastic family Garrisons day out.
With the weather turning slightly towards the first signs of evening, so the cricket pitch was tided up, bunting cleared and residents started to make their way home. the following Wednesday, the GRA dropped off the raffle money totalling £301 to Havens Hospice, where we were also told that the tombola had also raised £300. It is therefore, on behalf of Havens Hospice that the GRA thanks everyone whom donated prizes and turned up for the event. We as a community managed to raise £601 for charity in one afternoon which is astounding.
Following feedback from many of you, the GRA will most definitely discuss putting on another event next year.
